Know the HEART of men..

_MG_5510Know the heart of men, learn how to get to the heart of your subject and shape your story. A great story revolves around this, once you know the heart of men because every heart has different needs, laughter, hope, inspiration, and lots more, every heart yearns for something beyond comprehension.

That is why most of the classic films, remembered, awarded and the ones that stick to our minds are films that deals with the heart, this is a universal language, a language understood by every human being and often times even by animals.

Stories that touch the heart of men will always linger through eternity and beyond, there are times when stories told or movies have all the qualities to be a blockbuster but if it has no heart it will then be easily forgotten.

Think of all the great films you saw through the years and think of what you remember, the music, cinematography, locations but most of all we remember the characters and the way they handle their heart issues.

One of Albert Gayo’s short films “Cities with a Heart” was shown in international film festivals such as New York Audience Now, Big Arthouse Chicago, and Indiewise Miami Filmfest, Wiper Filmfest, and also a semi-finalist for Short International Open Filmfest in Bangladesh, “Crystal Wish” won Best Actress for Emirates Short Film Festival, his recent music video “If No Be God” is also a semi-finalist for Caribbean Market Filmfest and Indiewise Miami Filmfest on top of his other 3 films that were also shown in different international screenings.

Now, Albert has already received invitations to screen his first feature film “Year After” in various International Film Festival around the world.

“Year After” is a story of best friend James and Carlo that turned sour after 9 years of friendship because of James wife, but after one year they accidentally met each other once again and realized their needs of depending from one another. What are you willing to do for your best friend? will you love your friend to the extent of losing your family? these and lots more are going to be tackled by “Year After” starring Angelo Carl, Arnel Hasigan, Albert Gayo, Lawrence Binghay , Beth Castillano and Carl Lorenz, coming soon to cinemas near you.

Location Inspires Stories..

_MG_5932LOCATION INSPIRES STORIES
“Learn how to find spectacular locations and turn them into functional sets for your own films” Werner Herzog

Once I asked Filipino award-winning director Brilliante Mendoza what is his next project after “Lola” in a Q&A portion after his film screening at DIFF, he thought for a while and said “I’d like to do something about Mindanao but will know once I’m at the location” then a year after that encounter, “Thy Womb” was shown.

Yes, location sometimes gives you the inspiration on what story to tell, maybe one of the reasons why most of my short films and my first feature film “Year After” are all about OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) in the Middle East.

After spending 22 years in Bahrain and 8 years in Dubai I have lived, worked, and met friends and people that told me their life experiences and even saw their interesting and wonderful struggles, hardships and celebrations of living in the Middle East.

There were a few inspiring OFW films that came out from the Middle East in the last decade, “Sarah Balabagan”, “Dubai” “Katas ng Saudi” among others but I don’t think there’s enough remarkable films that I can think of or films that are worth remembering.

And to think that there are over 2 million OFW working in the Middle East for the last few years, just imagine the 2 million stories they have. So our first feature film “Year After” written, produced, and directed by Albert Gayo will focus on some of the Filipinos who are working and worked in the Middle East for some time.

“Year After” is a movie that will look at the life of best friends James and Carlo and their hopes, struggles, betrayal, and beauty of their life in the Middle East, starring Arnel Hasigan, Angel Carl, Lorenz Binghay, Carl Melias, Kenzo Garcia, and Beth Castillano, coming soon to cinemas near you.

Film is an Art but also a Business.

_MG_5589FILM IS AN ART BUT ALSO A BUSINESS
We always think that filmmakers job is to make films because we are artist, it is actually one of the most exciting art forms because as filmmakers we can create new life, we can create a new world new hope, new beginning, yet after we had created this and bring to life a story from our imagination what’s next?

We then want to share it with as many people as we can reach, we want to tell them the story that we created, show them the new world, the new person we gave life to and this is where the business side starts.

As one of the famous director Werner Herzog said ”Film is an Art but it’s also a business” yes, filmmakers, it is not enough to have the finished film in our hands if no one or there is not enough people to watch it.

We should find a way to screen it to as many people as we can, to as much crowd as we can to show them the new world we created, the new characters we gave life to and maybe they will be able to sympathize with our creations or be with or against them

Once in a while we get bashers that do not understand our films or the world we created, do not be discouraged for we know what is involve in the process, we filmmakers do not make films for certain individuals, we make films to tell them the story we know to the best of our abilities using the tools we have the camera and lights.

If one way or the other some people get to change their actions, beliefs, or understanding because of what we have shown them then we won.

“Year After” is the first feature film written, and directed by Dubai-based Filipino OFW filmmaker Albert Gayo who is also one of the stars of the film, “After I wrote, produced and directed over 15 short films and documentaries in which 7 of them were selected and 2 semi-finalist at various International Film Festival, I decided to come out with my first feature film”

“Year After” is a story of unconditional love, friendship, and betrayal starring Angelo Carl, Arnel Hasigan, Lorenz Binghay, Albert Gayo, Carl Lorenz Melias, Kenzo Garcia, and Beth Castillano, coming soon in cinemas near you.

Where and How to market and distribute your Indie film..

FILM MARKETING AND DISTRIBUTION
For Filmmakers one of the challenges is the marketing and distribution part of the films, now you have the finished edited film in your hard drive and you want to show it to the world, how do we dot it.

There are various ways in which to do this and also depending on which part of the world you are in, the first option is self-distribution, this is where you get in touch with different distributors and show them your film and if they get interested they do distribution for you.

Also, you can actually talk to your local cinema owner or cinema managers and either hire the screening room for a couple of days with an option of longer runs and negotiate the ticket sales percentage.

Another option is you pay certain film distribution company and they will charge you a certain amount, I know one agency in Los Angles or New York and with a minimum amount of $10,000 you can have a cinema run in either one of the city together with publicist and marketing online, they will do everything for your film to make sure you get the exposure you wanted worldwide.

One more option is to enter International Film Festival especially the major ones and once you get awards or become a winner and manage to build the hype, then the film distribution companies will be the one running after you to get signed up.

As we say, filmmaking is not only an art form but at the same time a business as well, and most of the filmmakers always and should allocate a fair amount of budget on marketing and distributing our films.

We want to communicate to as many viewers as we can because we believed in the story that we did and it is a shame if we won’t be able to show it to the world.

“Year After” first feature film written and directed by OFW Filmmaker Albert Gayo after completing about 15 short films and documentaries in which some of them were shown in Film festivals in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Bangladesh and Miami is a story of unconditional love, friendship, and betrayal starring Angelo Carl, Arnel Hasigan, Lorenz Binghay and Carl Lorenz will be shown in cinemas near you.

Know your characters really well.

_MG_5539KNOW YOUR CHARACTERS REALLY WELL.
We have to know why he chuckles every time he laughs, why he’s afraid of the dark, why he hates using a spoon while eating, why he goes out in the garden for confrontation, these and lots more are some of the things we should know about the character we write about.

Writing a story is one of the most creative part of filmmaking because we have the privilege, knowledge, and capacity to mold people as if they are actually our babies, we write their life and know them from inside out, from the time they were born until the present day, we know every tiny detail of how they look like, what they like and don’t like, their mannerism, their hopes, struggles, and happiness, as a writer we know them all.

And this brings us to a make-believe world, a magical place where we control every second, every minute of what comes and what happens, we put our antagonist and protagonist at situations for them to handle, sometimes it’s hard because we mix fiction with reality and yet exciting because we can do whatever we want in that make believe world.

Maybe this is why filmmaking, is I think,  one of the most exciting fields in art because our creation has no boundaries, we can do whatever and whenever we needed it, it’s like living in a different dimension.

“Year After” the first feature film I wrote, produced and directed is a story of unconditional love, friendship, longing and betrayal and starring Angelo Carl, Arnel Hasigan, Albert Gayo, Lawrence Binghay and Carl Lorenz, coming soon to cinemas near you.

Give the audience space to think..

_MG_5298
We should never underestimate our audience, yes there were times when we shoot our films and inform them of every minute details, once I was watching a movie and I can tell that they just wanted to make the film unnecessary longer.

You see the character open the car, open the door, close the door, go up the stairs, open the bedroom door, close the bedroom door and lie down in bed, where in fact we can just show him open the car and cut it into him lying in bed because the rest of action does not mean or do anything to the character.

Unless something important happens or something relevant is there for later but shooting it for the sake of making the film long is unfair for our audience.

Once we watched any film of our choice it only shows that we care, we care because we expected to listen and watch the story, we watched because we want to know what happened, either the tagline or the trailer had intrigued us that we want to know more about the character because we CARE.

Follow the story of James and Carlo as they struggle to keep their past relationship intact even after their family, social media, and people around them ruined their precious connection, will they succeed in keeping it or will they just go with the flow and follow what the society dictates.

“Year After” story of unconditional love, longing, and betrayal written and directed by the Middle East based Filipino director Albert Gayo, featuring Angelo Carl, Arnel Hasigan, Lawrence Binghay and Albert Gayo coming soon to cinemas near you.
